Salt, is it good for you?
Salt, is it good for me you may be wondering?
So I have had a few people I know recently mention that they have reduced salt in their diet due to high blood pressure, as it was recommended to them to do this.
I found this surprising as good salt, so not the cheap table salt, but Himalayan or hand harvested Celtic sea salt, has many benefits. One of the benefits is that it has 70 or more of the 108 minerals that the body needs for optimal function are found in good salt. Hence I have found good salt too be a good highly source of minerals for the body.
Additionally a year and a half ago I found out that for my body to absorb the water I drank I needed to have magnesium in my cells. If I did not have magnesium in my cells the water wouldn’t be taken up by my cells. So I started to put a pinch of slat into every glass of water I had. By adding a pinch of good salt to water one is making it an electrolyte and more easily absorbed by the cells in my body. I have found I urinate less frequently and I need to drink less water as I am absorbing more of what I am drinking.
So I thought I would look into it to get a better understanding. Here I am going to share with you what I found out about the benefits of salt to the human body.
I learnt that if one is having a heart attack today or a stroke level high blood pressure and calls an ambulance. One of the first things they do is inject you with saline solution. What is saline solution, is salt in water. Typically a bag of saline solution has 9000mg of salt in a bag. If your bp is extremely high and at stroke level they will push two bags of saline to you . This is usually done in the ambulance before you see a doctor. It helps the blood pressure come down.
You may be wondering how does saline solution, good salt in water, help the blood pressure come down? Well this is what I found.
The kidneys are what regulate and release water out of the body. The kidneys use a sodium potassium pump to pump water out of the body. Sodium is found in good salt. If we reduce our consumption of salt, we deprive ourselves of salt, and the kidneys don’t get the salt they need for the sodium potassium pump to work optimally and pump water out of the body. So due to this the body starts to retain water. As we retain water, this increases the volume of blood in the blood vessels. As the volume of blood has gone up but the blood vessels are the same size, it increases the blood pressure in the blood vessels. It is common for diuretics to be prescribed with then there is water retention, which often is or contains patented salt, to make you urinate.
So from this I concluded that consuming good salt, Himalayan or hand harvest Celtic sea salt or some other good salt, will actually help to regulate blood pressure rather than increase the blood pressure.
So if you have high blood pressure and are curious as to if this would help you, I would advise you to speak with the prescriber of the blood pressure medication you are on, to make sure that it is safe for you. If you do decide to try this, they may need to adjust the blood pressure medication they have given you.
I trust this was helpful to you.
