Homeopathy doesn't work for me!
I was inspired to write this as I have heard people say, “Homeopathy worked for my Mum but it did not work for me.” or “The remedy did not work.” or some similar phrase. Some say that they tried Homeopathy after a friend raved about it, but it does not seem to have given them the results it gave their friend.
So, why is this? Why does it work for some and not others? Homeopathy is complex and also very simple. It is used by a trained professional Homeopaths and also a parent treating a child from a Homeopathic home kit.
So what are the reasons behind why Homeopathic remedies work sometimes and not other times? Well the there are a number of reasons why Homeopathic remedy may not have worked for you and here are a few of them.

It was the wrong remedy. This is the most common one. You may have a friend who had a remedy for altitude sickness that worked really well for them, so you tried it and it did not alleviate your symptoms. Why is this? It is because there are many remedies for the altitude sickness and it may not have been the right one for you. Homeopathy works on the principle of like cures like, and so the symptoms must be matched to the specific symptoms of the remedy. Each remedy has slightly different symptoms. For example with altitude sickness Coca is often called “mountaineers’s remedy” and is used for symptoms like palpitations, anxiety, difficulty breathing, headache and fatigue. However there are many other remedies for altitude sickness, a few of which are, Carbo Vegetablis, for when there is a feeling of “air hunger” the need for fresh air or fanning and where the person feels faint; Calcarea Cabonica is suited for weak, chilly person who is experiencing vertigo and turning their head; Arsenicum Album is suited to those who are extremely chilly, restless, anxious and often fear death. This is not a full and complete list of remedies for altitude sickness but a few of the common ones that demonstrate the differences in symptoms.
It was the wrong potency.
Most commonly remedies you can purchase from your local health food shop or pharmacy will be 12C or 30C potencies, and these generally work most acute situations. You may find the remedy stops working after a time, like it did initially. It could be you need a different potency. So how do you know what is the right potency is? This is when it is best to consult a professional trained Homeopath as you will not have access to higher potencies. It is also an opportunity to be sure it was the right remedy and to also check the potency.
It seem to work initially and then stopped.
This can be because your body needed more of the remedy, which is often the case with an recent trauma. If there is pain, you may take the remedy once and the remedy alleviates the pain. Then pain comes back and this may be because you need to repeat the remedy more frequently, as the healing process is using up the energy of the remedy quickly. If you take three doses and have no relief, stop talking the remedy and look for one that better matches your symptoms.
Chronic issue
This is often the case when the symptoms are chronic. Acute symptoms like bruising, burn, cut, nausea, fever and other such physical symptoms are often how people start using homeopathy. If you are looking for remedies for chronic conditions like Arthritis, IBS, joint pain, recurrent UTIs, kidneys stones, migraines, anxiety, eczema, painful periods, menopausal symptoms etc. you may get some temporary relief. However, these kinds of chronic conditions are often connected to deeper issues like mental or emotional trauma or family history. So if you are looking for homeopathy to help with chronic conditions it is is best to seek the help of a trained professional homeopath, who has had 3 years full time or 5 years part-time training, so that they have learnt how homeopathic remedies can be used in chronic, deeper long standing situations and diseases.
Something you took antidoted the remedy.
This can be the case when the remedy is working well and then it seems to suddenly stop and symptoms return. This is not something that is common in my practice, however I do see it occasionally. Common things that antidote a remedy can be coffee, brushing teeth and mint tea. If this happens keep gap of 30minutes between taking the remedy and doing any of these things and see if that helps.
Your lifestyle may be the issue.
It may be your lifestyle that is maintaining the symptoms you are experiencing. In Homeopathy we call this a maintaining cause. So for example if you get a stuffy nose every morning when you eat cheese and or drink milk in the week before, and when you stop eating and drinking milk products you have no stuffy nose. A remedy will not magic away the stuffy nose if you continue to consume milk and cheese that is having this effect. There s no magic pill that enables you to continue to live like this. Does that make sense? So its is important to manage your stress levels, eat a diet that is nutritious and not filled with food you are sensitive to, exercise regularly, keep toxins to a minimum (food, drink, drugs, environmental).
